Teleclass Etiquette

If you’re new to teleclasses, this message is for you (and anyone else who wants to avoid embarrassment)!

Lots of callers on a teleclass means static, bad connections, and background noise multiplied lots of time. Ack! Nobody can hear a thing unless we all follow some rules. In honor of Bill Maher, let's call them New Rules!

New Rules:

  1. Don’t flush the toilet while you’re on the call. We can hear you!
(Unless you mute yourself with *6.)
  2. Don’t watch TV or listen to the radio while you’re on the call. We can hear it!
(Unless you mute yourself with *6.)
  3. Don’t put us on hold on your company phone. We can hear the Muzak!
    (Mute yourself with *6 instead.)
  4. Don’t cough, sneeze, or blow your nose during the call. Yech! We can hear you!
(Unless you mute yourself with *6!)
  5. Don’t call in with a calling card that’s about to run out of minutes. We can hear all the announcements!
  6. Don’t yell at your kids during the call. We can hear you!
(Come to think of it, don’t mute yourself for this. Please don’t yell at your kids!)
  7. Don’t call on a phone with a battery that’s about to go. It makes horrible noises!
  8. Don’t walk away from your phone.
(Hang up first! To paraphrase Sting: Every step you take, every move you make, every word you say…will be overheard by a crowd of people who are all P.O.’d at you!)
  9. Last, but not least, don’t have an intimate conversation with your lover during the call.
(Actually, we recommend no multitasking of any sort, so you need to prioritize what you really want to be doing, and it’s okay if you hang up, because we’ll send you the recording, so have fun!)

You probably think this is all a joke, but I’ve heard every one of these bloopers on previous teleclasses, and we can usually tell who did it! We could mass-mute everybody, but that would mean a canned call. We can help you better if we answer your questions, so we want you to be able to talk. So do us a favor and follow the rules!

Also:

  • DO call with a good connection. Cell phones, cordless phones, and international calls sometimes bring static or echos and we may have to ask you to hang up and call back.
(Yes, we know it’s not fair.)
  • DO call on time. We have lots to cover, and we’ll start right away.
  • DO check in at the beginning of the call. We need to know who you are.
  • DO get focused and listen closely. This stuff is subtle.
  • DO ask all your questions. If you’re wondering, we want to know.
(And you can unmute yourself with the same *6.)

That’s it! Now we’re all ready for a life- and business-transforming call!
